Can the mask help with acne and breakouts?
Yes. The CHOUOHC Radiance LED Mask has a dedicated acne mode, and LED light therapy — particularly blue light — is one of the most well-established non-invasive treatments for acne-prone skin.
Why LED light therapy works for acne
Acne is primarily caused by the overproduction of sebum, clogged pores, and the proliferation of Cutibacterium acnes (acne bacteria) and other bacteria beneath the skin's surface. Inflammation driven by this bacterial activity is what turns a blocked pore into a visible, painful breakout.
Blue LED light has a natural antibacterial effect — it targets and destroys acne-causing bacteria at the skin's surface without damaging surrounding tissue. It also helps calm the inflammation that makes breakouts more severe and longer-lasting.
Red LED complements this by reducing inflammation deeper in the skin and supporting the healing process — helping existing breakouts resolve faster and reducing post-acne redness.
Yellow LED assists with skin cell turnover and helps address the uneven tone and marks that breakouts leave behind.
Which mode to use
Mode 6 — 15 minutes is the dedicated acne mode. It uses red, yellow, blue, and near-infrared LEDs in combination to target bacterial activity, calm inflammation, and begin the repair process in a single session.
For ongoing acne management, Mode 6 is your primary mode. You can also rotate it with Mode 4 (25 minutes, targets sebum production and pore congestion) to address the root cause of breakouts alongside the active ones.
Suggested approach for acne-prone skin:
- Active breakouts: Mode 6 as your primary daily mode
- Between breakouts / prevention: alternate Mode 6 with Mode 4
- If post-acne marks are also a concern: introduce Mode 5 into your rotation (brightening, dark spots)
Is it safe to use on active breakouts?
Yes — unlike many topical treatments or physical exfoliation methods, LED therapy is non-invasive and does not involve touching or disturbing the skin. It is safe to use over active breakouts. Do not use the mask over any open wounds or skin that is broken, but closed breakouts are fine.
Can it help with cystic or hormonal acne?
LED therapy can help manage cystic and hormonal acne by reducing the bacterial and inflammatory component of breakouts. It is not a hormonal treatment, so it won't address the root hormonal cause — but it can meaningfully reduce the severity, frequency, and healing time of breakouts. Many people with hormonal acne use it as a consistent management tool alongside other treatments.
What about acne scars and post-acne marks?
For red or pink post-acne marks (post-inflammatory erythema), red light in Mode 1, Mode 3, or Mode 6 helps accelerate healing. For dark post-acne marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), Mode 5 is the most targeted option — see our dark spots and hyperpigmentation article for more detail.
When will I see results?
- 1–2 weeks: Reduced redness and inflammation in active breakouts
- 2–4 weeks: Fewer new breakouts with consistent use, faster healing of existing ones
- 4–8 weeks: Noticeable reduction in breakout frequency and improved overall skin clarity
- 8–12 weeks: Sustained improvement in skin tone, texture, and acne frequency
Consistency is key — LED therapy works as a cumulative treatment. Daily use is ideal; 3–5 times per week is effective and realistic.
